Nymi wearable wristband tracks heartbeat for device authentication sans any passwords
Imagine a world where you don’t have to input passwords into your laptop, tablet or smartphone every time you want to access the device, but without compromising security. A world where it’s only your biometric signature that authenticates you as the only user of your device and no other. Nymi by Bionym (Canadian start-up) is a wristband that reads your cardiac rhythm (electrocardiogram ECG) which is unique for every individual and after that identifies you as the authenticated user to access computer, smartphone, car and many other gadgets and products that permit security protection. The possibilities are endless as Nymi makes all other biometric authentication methods like facial recognition, voice recognition, iris scan etc. seem lame as the only thing Nymi requires for authentication is to be near your gadget and then the cardiac rhythm signature to you will be used for accessing any device.
Seeming more like a sci-fi movie gadget like we see in James Bond movies, Nymi is the easiest and most convenient way to secure your gadgets from unauthorized access without any hassles of physically typing-in passwords.
Once you clasp Nymi on your wrist, and the topside sensor is in contact with bottom sensor once the loop is complete, the device is activated and now becomes your authentication token for all the paired devices. For example when near you laptop, it will automatically unlock or your car will automatically open. There are integrated accelerometer and gyroscope sensors that pick up your movement for simple gesture recognition to perform task-specific commands like opening doors or trunk of your high-end car.
Even if someone else wears this device and tries to breach into your secure environment, it won’t be possible as their cardiac signature will be different. So, in a way it is a double authentication method that cannot be hacked or abused in any way.
Using the Authorized Authentication Device (AAD) method which converts your smartphone or any other device into an unlockable entity, the app can be installed to start this functionality. Nymi uses Bluetooth Low Energy to transmit data by maximizing battery life and customizing program notifications for email, text etc.
Currently Nymi is up for preorder at $79 and you can also design your own version of Nymi to enhance the functionality even further.
