World’s first six-sided battery makes differently-shaped smartwatches possible
Wearable technology is undeniable the biggest thing in technology industry. If Gartner’s research is anything to go by, smartwatches are going to occupy 40 percent of wearable tech market space by 2016 and by 2020 over 100 million smartwatches will be shipped worldwide. To create more opportunities for this market, LG Chemical (aka LG Chem) has developed a hexagonal battery. According to the company, the unique shaped battery will make new smartwatch designs possible.
The hexagonal battery, in comparison to currently available rectangular batteries, boasts of an amazing 25 percent more efficiency in its storage capacity. Owing to its enhanced efficiency, the six-sided battery would increase battery life of wearable devices, including smartwatches by almost 4 hours.
According to LG Chem spokesman Woo Byeong-min,
LG Chem has started selling hexagonal batteries to global tech firms.
LG Chem is working in collaboration with many global smartwatch makers, who could be releasing smartwatches with the new hexagonal battery towards the end this year. The company has chosen to remain tight lipped on partner manufacturers it is supplying the batteries.
It is interesting to note, LG Chem is working on a range of other small batteries. These include, stepped batteries that feature layers of battery cells, curved batteries, flexible batteries and L-shaped batteries.
