Don’t fall for Erica dude, she’s just a hyper-realistic robot
Japan as a nation seems to have an upper-hand when it comes to developing life-like robots. Impersonating human body language, speech and facial expressions is not an easy task and perhaps the ultimate goal is to create a humanoid robot that is somewhat close to what was shown in the movie Ex Machina. To our surprise an extremely human-like robot has just been revealed in Japan and it is downright impressive.
This is Erica, a 23-year old android that instills our belief in a future that will be filled by robots that are human-like in every aspect you can think possible. It is developed by a collaboration between Japan Science and Technology Agency, Osaka University, the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Kyoto University. Erica is so real that it makes the lifelike Toshiba android look pretty ordinary.
Unlike other similar robotic projects that claim to be close to how humans act, you can call it an ultra-realist robotic that is hard to deny. The speech pattern, body language, facial gestures, blinking eyes, head movement and the intelligent software; all combine to give this intellectual robot a definitive edge. That was apparently visible at the press conference reveal of Erica where the press engaged in conversation with her and there was nothing to suggest that this robot might actually be a human!
Everything about Erica is so fascinating, thanks to the developers who have left no stone unturned
When a reporter asked her a question “What are your hobbies?” Erica replied very confidently “I like watching movies, sports, and anime. Do you share any of my hobbies? I like watching sports. Oh but you’re so busy with your work, you must not have much free time to do it”.
That is just one of the examples of the conversation Erica got engulfed in. Now, if that is not an impressive piece of humanoid robotics, you got to be kidding me!
But one fact is for real, Erica shows us what the future of robotics is going to be.
