IFA 2015: Samsung Gear S2 makes an impressive first appearance
Samsung has finally took the drapes off Gear S2 smartwatch at IFA 2015 in Berlin, Germany, and it does look like a flagship killer. Unlike the Gear S smartwatch released last year, this one is more of the sporty kind, and one everyone would want to wear on their wrist. On the inside too this wearable is made for the kill with its functionality and user-friendly operation. This smartwatch has been building up for the IFA event and Samsung did tease some of the details in the last few days. The Tizen OS powered watch has an edge above the Android Wear powered smartwatches and dare I say that it is by far the best looking wearable in town.
The device is powered by a Exynos 3250 1.2 GHz dual core processor and 1.5 GB RAM with 4GB storage and NFC for charging wirelessly. It is compatible with any smartphone running Android 4.4 (or later) OS and has the option to make payments with Samsung Pay. Gear S2 comes with a lot of options to change the look of watch faces (designed by Atelier Mendini) and the way icons sit on the dial.
Gear S2 comes with a rotating bezel that is a killer feature
Talking about the icons, they look a bit similar to the Apple Watch’s design, but Samsung would have sorted that out proactively to avoid any issues. Samsung said that the smartwatch will have over 1000 apps in the coming days as they are working in close counters with 100 app developers to come-up with interesting ways to explore the hardware.
Samsung Gear S2 comes with a unique rotatable bezel ring that is used to toggle between apps, change music tracks, zoom into maps or scroll through messages. AS you would expect, the watch has fitness and health tracking capabilities too.
The battery life is promised to be around 2-3 days on normal usage and on the 1.2-inch Super AMOLED screen (360 x 360 resolution at 302 ppi) that’s acceptable. The watch will come in two models – which will have WiFi and 3G connectivity options. The Gear S2 Classic model will be priced the highest and other models will have a lower price.
The price of the smartwatch has not yet been revealed and we’ll have a tab on that as soon as Samsung decides to leak it. However, they have said that WiFi version could be coming next month and the 3G model will follow after that.
