It is quite difficult to find a household in an urban area that does not have some form of internet connection. Many homes are equipped with either Wi-Fi or broadband. This is usually in addition to mobile broadband that many individuals have for their mobile devices.

It is safe to say that internet is an integral part of our daily lives. There are also several industries including cell tower real estate agencies that have invested in this venture. This is with good reason; we are becoming more and more dependent on the services offered by the internet. This is one of the reasons of that there is a new form of network connection that is being created. It is being termed Light Fidelity or more commonly known as Li-Fi. Here is what you need to know about this growing technology.

What Is Li-Fi?

There are certain similarities between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi as they both utilize electromagnetic means to transmit data wirelessly. Li-Fi, however, uses visible light as a medium while Wi-Fi uses radio waves. Li-Fi is a visible light communications system. It uses a photo-detector and a signal processing component that converts data into content that can be streamed.

This technology is dependent on the light emitting diode light bulbs that are a part of the household light system. The light bulbs allow for the data to be transferred at speeds reaching 224 gigabits per second. The data is input into the LED bulb which transmits the data to the photo-detector. The data is implanted in the beam of the LED light. This data is converted into an electrical signal before being transformed into binary data that we can view on our various devices.

Disadvantages of Li-Fi

As with all emerging technologies, there are still some wrinkles to be sorted regarding Li-Fi technology. The first is that unlike Wi-Fi or broadband, Li-Fi cannot pass through walls. This requires the necessary LED bulbs will have to be placed in each area or room that requires internet access. This can pose a problem as the technology cannot easily be applied to public areas. Here, it faces a drawback against other forms of internet connections.

The other disadvantage is that the LED lights need to be on if the user needs uninterrupted connectivity. The lights will need to be turned on even when there is daylight. This may not appeal to many particularly as utility bills tend to be quite costly. People are also becoming more conscious about the effect of energy use on the environment. This means that they are trying to reduce the amount of energy that they consume.

Future Possibilities

Li-Fi is still an extremely interesting technology on the rise. The increased speeds, in particular, make it a promising innovation when data speeds are so important. Any shortcomings faced by the technology, may not be as halting as initially thought. For instance, the shorter reach of Li-Fi may actually make it more secure than most broadband or Wi-Fi connections. It may not be the answer to all the problems faced by internet users, but it is certainly worth the attention it is receiving.
