Stunning replica of hijacked Pan Am Boeing 747 built in just 48 days
Do you remember the ill-fated Pan Am Boeing 747 flight 73 that was hijacked in 1986 with all 360 passengers on-board by terrorists while on ground in Karachi? A Bollywood film, mainly a biopic to Neerja Bhanot, a purser on board who had sacrificed her life to save the lives of other passengers is receiving an overwhelming response from the audience.
Another person who is making headlines after movie’s success is the set designer for the film – Aparna Sud. She created identical full-size replica of actual aircraft Boeing 747 that was hijacked. Amazingly she completed the replica in 48 days with a team of 350 members that worked day and night to meet the deadline.
Aparna had to go through every minute detail about 1986 model Boeing 474. She went through almost every possible resources including Pan Am’s website to get pictures, diagrams, 3D models, and pictures from the day of the hijack, documented references etc. She even consulted the pilot who were flying the aircraft and also met aeronautical engineers and ex-employees of the Pan Am (Pan American World Airways)
The results were satisfying and the team successfully created the replica despite facing many challenges, like printing 3D cockpit parts and chairs and make adjustments to accommodate the shooting crew with its equipment. Another challenge was to make sure the set could tolerate weight of about 500 people during shooting. For this she tested it with a team of expert architects.
Aparna had left her native place Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, in 2001 to start her carrier as an interior designer, but gradually paved her way into Bollywood. Neerja is so far the biggest breakthrough for her, but she has other movies in her profile, such as Nishabd, ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, Tevar etc.
Aparna has also completed an international project for a Hollywood film, Heartbeats, directed by Duane Adler. Her dream project is to build set for Mughal-e-Azam, one of her favorite films.
