These human-like robots are so real you’re eyes will fail to distinguish
We live in a world where distinguishing reality from illusion is becoming difficult to comprehend. Thanks to robotics and technology advancements, creating artificial humans is inching closer to the ultimate goal of perfection. The robots we were accustomed to see till now are no more just a piece of metal with flashing LEDS waiting for their master’s next command. In fact, now robots have become more human-like, both in looks and behavior. The day isn’t far away when robots are going to overtake humans which is kind of scary. For now though, let’s leave that for the future and have a look at some of the most realistic looking humanoids seen so far.
# Showa Hanako 2 Dental Surgery Robot
Developed by Tokyo’s Showa University, Showa Hanko 2 is a dental surgery robot patient which simulates a typical human suffering from dental problems. The robot has been manufactured by Tmsuk under the guidance of researchers from Showa University. This humanoid patient emulates the response, gestures and sudden mood changes of a dental patient. The idea is to give dental students an idea of what they are going to experience with real patients. The robot has a very real human like face and to take its realism even further; the researchers have added gestures like blink, sneeze, head shake, cough, gag reflex and moving tongue. Showa Hanako 2 can also engage in conversation thanks to its speech recognition software.
# Min Robotic Card Dealer
Meet Kim, a robotic card dealer robot developed by Hong Kong-based gaming machine manufacturer Paradise Entertainment Ltd. in association with Hanson Robotics. The pretty faced robot showed-off its card dealing capabilities at gaming show in Macau casinos. Min is all set to go major improvements in the future which include conversing with the players and remembering their names.
# Nadine Robot
Researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore have developed a humanoid receptionist robot which looks strikingly human-like. Named as Nadine, the Android is doppelganger of Nadia Thalmann, a robotic professor at NTU’s School of Computer Engineering and creator of this robot. She has soft skin, smooth brunette hair and eyes that attract you into knowing more about her. This robot remembers the name of people who have had conversation with her previously and an AI engine allows her to reply to questions or even ask some on her own.
# Yangyang Robot
This is Yangyang, a realistic looking robot created by China’s Shanghai Yangyang Intelligent Robot Science Service Centre and renowned Japanese robotics professor Hiroshi Ishiguro. The robot got unveiled at the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC) 2015 in Beijing, China. This convincing humanoid can move its face, speak and make hand gestures too. It is made from flesh rubber material which gives it a very human like appearance. To actuate the facial movement 40 motors work in tandem and give the freedom to smile, wink or even act drunk.
# Toshiba Android
Toshiba in association with aLab Inc, Osaka University, Shebaura Institute of Technology have developed this impressive humanoid. Having a striking human-like appearance, the intelligent robot is more of an assistant for elderly who want company. The robot can move its head, create facial expressions and start conversations in sign language. Toshiba is planning to integrate many other advanced and useful technologies to create a better commercial version.
# Jia Jia Humanoid
Chen Xiaoping from the University of Science and Technology of China has made this cute looking humanoid named Jia Jia. This robot is unbelievably life-like, engages the user in conversation and is humble enough to address her boss as ‘My Lord’. She can perform a series of tasks like waving her hand and answering questions. Using sensors, she can locate people in relations to her presence and even tell them to take selfies from a distance so that her face doesn’t look fat. She can roll her eyeballs mimicking natural movements.
# Android Geminoid F Robot
Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratory at Osaka University have designed the Android Geminoid F which was revealed at the World Robot Exhibition 2015 in Beijing. The five-foot six-inch tall robot has human like facial expressions and can recognize body language and make eye-to-eye contact. It can smile, furrow eyebrows and move her mouth. Her facial movement comes thanks to the motorized actuators powered by air pressure and an AI engine gives her the ability to spark conversations and keep them up.
# Scarlett Johansson Robot
Hong Kong man Ricky Ma has stunned the world with his homemade humanoid robot that looks like Scarlett Johansson. Putting-in almost one-and-half year into building this for a total cost of $50,000; Ricky is one Scarlett Johansson fan who have fulfilled his fantasy of being with the star. This robot smiles, gets surprised and does other things which make it hard to believe that she is not real.
# Geminoid DK Humanoid
We’ve got so much used to seeing robots coming from Japan and China that it is surprising if one creeps up from somewhere else. Geminoid DK is a doppelganger of Professor Scharfe, an associate professor at Aalborg University in Denmark. This is work of Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro who decided to make this one in Europe and just like his other humanoid creations, this one also look nothing less than a realistic human-being.
# Leonardo da Vinci Robot
The man behind development of this strikingly real robot is ASADA Minrou who is a professor at Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering. Emulating the highly intellectual Italian Leonardo da Vinci who had a vast array of interests and talents, this humanoid is designed in such a way that it is able to exhibit precise body language and facial expressions which are jaw-dropping.
# Erica Humanoid
This is Erica, a 23-year old android that instills our belief in a future that will be filled by robots that are human-like in every aspect you can think possible. It is developed by a collaboration between Japan Science and Technology Agency, Osaka University, the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Kyoto University. The speech pattern, body language, facial gestures, blinking eyes, head movement and the intelligent software; all combine to give this intellectual robot a definitive edge.
# Sophia Robot
Hanson Robotics and Hiroshi Ishiguro have a specialty in creating robots which are eerily human-like and Sophia is another example of that fact. The robot’s skin is made from a patented silicon material and thanks to the motors fitted inside her face, she’s able to emulate 62 facial expressions. Camera fitted in her eyes and the computer software gives her the ability to follow faces and recognize people. The humanoid uses Google Chrome voice-recognition software for its conversation and the AI software makes sure it keeps getting better with time.
