Newly developed bacteria-powered battery to make disposable, standalone papertronics a reality

Bacteri-powered paper battery
Self-powered papertronics development is in infancy because the energy sources put a limit on it. To deal with it, paper-batteries are being extensively researched to explore full potential of the technology. In a similar attempt, researchers at the Binghamton University, State University of New York, has developed a paper battery that is powered by bacteria by harnessing its cellular respiration as energy.

U.S. Army to replace HMMVV with newer, faster, and blast-proof L-ATV

U.S. Army has announced a contract with Oshkosh for the newer, heavier, blast-proof and faster version of it High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMVV) that was introduced in 1980 and resembled a jeep-like structure. The new version is named Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV). The objective is to provide more safety from bomb blasts, to which earlier version was highly vulnerable, while troops move in dangerous and unfamiliar tough terrains. The L-ATV borrows some features from the MRAPs – heavy truck designed to withstand bomb-blasts. However, the L-ATV is faster than its descendant HMMVV. Read More…

Indian engineers build low cost 3D-Printed robotic hand that is lighter, more efficient

indian-engineers buids 3D-printed hand

As 3D-printing technology is achieving more perfection, the day isn’t far when amputees would be able to regain their mobility as well as functionality through brain-controlled complex prosthetic exactly like real limbs. A team of Indian engineers claims to have invented a 3D-Printed prosthetic hand that is way far efficient and affordable than currently available prosthetic in the market. The team from the Amrita University in India showcased its innovation at the tree-day International Robotics and Automation for Humanitarian Application (RAHA 2016) at Amrita University in Kollam, Kerala in India.

Researchers develop EEG-based, non-invasive robotic arm that converts thoughts into action

EEG-Based Robotic Cap
A team of researchers from the University of Minnesota have achieved a breakthrough success in the field of prosthesis by developing a non-invasive technology that doesn’t require any implant to transmit brain-signals.  The researchers have developed EEG-based robotic arm that a subject can control through thoughts. As per a study published in Scientific Reports, an electroencephalography (EEG) based brain-computer interface can record even weak electrical singles in the brain of the subject.  The set-up includes a specialized EEG cap that houses 64 electrodes.  The cap processes the signals to transmit it to the robotic arm to grasp or move a subject to specific direction.
