A rocket propelled grenade took a comrades life and blew away Andrew Garthwaite’s right arm off in Afghanistan but that isn’t deterring him from having a normal life as a brain-controlled prosthetic arm infuses determination and spirit right into his veins. Andrew, a 24 year old British soldier, got this new age state-of-the-art limb connected to his nervous system back in January by a six-hour intensive operation in Vienna, Austria. This prosthetic limb has given him the ability to ride his motorbike, maneuver around his car and perform other activities that could not be possible with an ordinary prosthetic limb.

The team has 3D printed a prosthetic hand that costs less than £40 for Caleb Morrison, a 16-year-old from East Kilbride in Scotland. Caleb was born without right wrist and hand. Researchers develop EEG-based, non-invasive robotic arm that converts thoughts into action

A team of researchers from the University of Minnesota have achieved a breakthrough success in the field of prosthesis by developing a non-invasive technology that doesn’t require any implant to transmit brain-signals.  The researchers have developed EEG-based robotic arm that a subject can control through thoughts. As per a study published in Scientific Reports, an electroencephalography (EEG) based brain-computer interface can record even weak electrical singles in the brain of the subject.  The set-up includes a specialized EEG cap that houses 64 electrodes.  The cap processes the signals to transmit it to the robotic arm to grasp or move a subject to specific direction. Not only the hand but fingers can also be mind-controlled by the user. This brain-machine interface controls the real-time moment of individual prosthetic fingers. Using high-density electrocorticography (ECoG) array, the brain response is recorded and translated into the motor movement of fingers.
