A team of science students from West Brook High School in Beaumont, Texas, USA have really made the impossible possible. The team has 3D printed a prosthetic hand that costs less than £40 for Caleb Morrison, a 16-year-old from East Kilbride in Scotland. Caleb was born without right wrist and hand. This 3D printed robotic hand is actuated with muscle movement and works quite well for people having a missing hand. Not only that, the prosthetic hand is ideal for people having some loss in motor function, and also for people who want an increased physical capability. Finger movement is the last thing that stroke patient manages to regain in their recover. There are endless cases where patients don’t even mange to regain movement in the fingers. 3D printing is the new buzz word in the manufacturing industry, and everyone from students to professionals have been 3D printing prosthetics (amid other things) to help stroke patients who have limited mobility in the hands. Latest to join the fray is Daniel Levy and his team from Lehigh University, who has developed 3D printed open-source exoskeleton called Spiderhand, which helps stroke patients with limited finger movement to regain mobility in the hands. Most of the 3D printed prosthetic hands are manually controlled by the user, however in most cases they are not able to provide ample efficiency to the user due limited wrist mobility. Addressing this issue, Italian company Youbionic is on the verge of developing an electronically controlled, bionic 3D printed prosthetic hand.

The best things in life are priceless and that is what a 9 year old Matthew just discovered. Suffering from a rare condition from birth called limb difference which left him without any fingers in one hand, the kid had to live with the questions that other peers asked him about his mutated hand. This was really bugging out his mother who could not even think of buying a commercial prosthetic hand that costs at least $18,000. But then they met family friend Mason Wilde, a 16 year old Louisburg High School junior from Kansas regarding the problem and the solution was to make a 3D printed prosthetic hand.
