NASA testing SpaceX inflatable pod for Mars trips to save millions of dollars on launch costs

NASA has initiated the testing of Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) – an inflated habitat (compartment) for astronauts that could be expanded in Space and provide 20 times more room than present metal cabins. Also, it would save a lot of space as it can be inflated. The main idea is to materialize wish to deploy these expandable habitats as crew living quarters during the three-year trips to and from Mars.

SpaceX Crew Dragon takes maiden test flight, looks on-course for 2017 ISS mission

Elon Musk’s SpaceX gave a glimpse of their manned spacecraft that is destined to take astronauts to the ISS (International Space Station) in 2017. Yes, the Crew Dragon capsule that hopefully NASA will use to ferry 7 astronauts safely to the ISS. The capsule is made from highest-grade carbon fiber material and alcantara cloth which gives it structural strength as well as resistance while exiting/entering Earth’s atmosphere. In its maiden test flight, the spacecraft did exactly what the SpaceX team intended and therefore helps it inch close to the goal of first-ever commercial spacecraft flight with astronauts on-board.

Arachnobeea – Zero G drone that’ll walk aboard International Space Station

Drones could soon be helping astronauts aboard the space station(s) as NASA’s International SpaceApps Challenge dared hackers and engineers to make a drone that will be able to function in zero gravity. Arachnobeea team took the challenge well and designed a waking drone that can work autonomously in zero gravity. The quad rotor UAV is quite dexterous and can set out on flights inside the International Space Station (ISS) in a controlled manner.

NASA teams up with Google for smart space robots

NASA has collaborated with Google to increase the efficiency of its space robots. Intelligent Robotics Group at NASA’s Ames Research Center is sending Google smartphones with next-generation 3D-sensing technology to outer space for increasing the capabilities of flying SPHERE robots. The smartphones powered by Google’s Project Tango are fixed onto the ball-shaped hovering robots to increase their functionality. The volleyball-sized free-flying robots, known as SPHERES (Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental satellites) are designed to act as mobile assistant for the astronauts at the International Space Station.

Japanese Astronaut creates spectacular spiral light paintings aboard ISS

If you are an astronaut, and on a mission that requires you to be up in some station for days or even months, there can be times when you don’t do much. There is nothing much to pass your time when you are not amidst a task on-board the station and it can get boring at times. But creativity knocks your head even in zero gravity as one astronaut proved it. Astronaut Koichi Wakata decided to get his creative hat on a-board the International Space Station and made light paintings that you or I cannot make on Earth. Free from any gravity pulling things down, Koichi used a Spiral Top device created by Takuro Osaka which has a tendency to spin around in zero gravity to come up with random patterns. So take a jump and have look at the mesmerizing spiral light paintings created by Koichi Wakata on International Space Station.
