Sony’s Future Lab Program develops Interactive Tabletop and voice-assisted headphones

Sony wants to stay abreast the race for fashion-forward wearables that solve some inherent purpose. For this they have formed a new R&D outfit called Future Lab Program and they demonstrated a couple of prototype gadgets of the future at the SXSW event in Austin. One of these is a neck-worn Bluetooth headphone which is more of a multi-directional speaker and the other one an Interactive Tabletop projector that turns any surface into a touch-sensitive display. For now each one of these is a prototype and Sony hasn’t shed any light on whether they are going to get into production stage.

Sony has dropped down to outside the top 10 bestselling smartphone brands and to rectify that has come up with the Sony Xperia series smartphones. Alongside the Xperia Series phones announced at Mobile World Congress 2016, Sony also gave a glimpse of its Xperia Ear voice-assistant earbud which is something new to the tech world. Seeming more like an adaptation of the earpiece shown in movie ‘Her’, the accessory is your Siri or Cortona in the ear.

We haven’t been able to get our hands on the Sony Xperia Z5 yet, but from what we learn through early reviews, the video and camera quality of the 23-megapixel shooter on the Z5 is commendable, especially in 4K. Now, to showcase the abilities of a similar camera on the Z5’s little brother Xperia Z5 Compact; Sony has created a 48K 360 degree video using a dozen Z5 Compact’s rigged together. The footage from each smartphone is then edited and put together to form a 360 degree interactive video, which shows the phone cameras capabilities. To add heat to the virtual reality space, Sony has teased us with a video displaying what to expect from their virtual reality headset – PlayStation VR. The virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4, according to the released footage, will feature a 1,920 x RGB x 1,080 resolution 5.7-inch OLED display.
